Because orangutans are wild animals, sightings can never be guaranteed. However, Bukit Lawang offers one of the highest chances in the world to see Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat, and most visitors do encounter several during their trek.

Most orangutans encountered today are free-ranging wild orangutans. Some individuals are descendants of orangutans rehabilitated decades ago after the former rehabilitation center closed. They now live freely in the rainforest.
